I create paintings based on real observed moments in my life. Through my figurative paintings I hope to communicate the specific and unique emotions of those people I observe and to present a composition that is both aesthetically considered and atmospherically calculated to highlight the people I paint, their expressions, and their body language. I work from drawings made both from live observations as well as from copious amounts of photographs I take myself. The current state and accessibility of photograph technology allows me to gather a nearly endless and unique collection of images of people from which I can carefully compose a figurative scene. As someone who believes in the value and longevity of figurative and observational art, I feel imbued with great opportunity given these factors. Traditional media are currently my contemporary tools for this visual investigation and creation, but in general I believe the practice of observational and figurative art is not owned by any one media but is instead a concept that can be manifested in as many creative ways as there are artists willing to create. Figurative painting can create a unique intimacy between the viewer and the depicted. It is a matter of precision, but not of a strictly photorealistic sort. I also investigate the psychological gap between depictions of people I personally know versus the people I observe but have no direct relationship with. Through the process of intense looking, painting, I often find I can imagine a relationship with the people I will most likely never speak to. I think that condition is one shared with many people who spend parts of their lives around strangers, observing and reflecting. My painting process involves repetitious and preparative draftsmanship juxtaposed with spontaneous and succinct decisions and expression. This way of working speaks to my understanding of memory. It can be both through repetitive exposure and spontaneous epiphany that memories come to us, and in all cases that memory is its own new altered creature that is removed from any reality that exists beyond consciousness. Without the act of painting and engaging visually with the people I see in my life, I may have forgotten the experiences entirely. In giving these experiences visual form, I’ve endowed the moments and people with a type of significance In an age where countless images are available at a single touch, committing any particular image to memory more daunting but ultimately more exciting than ever. I often look to master painters who have contended with many figures in dynamic compositions. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Edouard Manet, Adolf Menzel, Walter Sickert, and Edward Hopper have always been greatly influential in my work. Recently I have been looking to contemporary compositions by Eric Fischl, Odd Nerdrum, and Kerry James Marshall.
