Emerging artist Sarah May Taylor works in sculpture and mixed media. Inspired by the works of artists like Senga Nengundi, Eva Hesse and Adrian Piper, Sarah's developing studio practice showcases works that elucidate her multidisciplinary interrogation of themes related to identity, fracture, notions of belonging and the role of the divine feminine. Her photo-based work conveys a curiosity about life-death cycles and its relationship to ritual. Taylor has a background in television and music journalism and is currently studying sculpture and art & social change at OCADU. Hanging Fruits, is based on the sacred feminine, and the recognition that divine essence balances and creates greater abilities for living and surviving. Materiality has been used to reinforce the abject and to expose the threat of some loss of distinction between self and abstract form; a reminder of both the body’s fragility and strength. These votive statues are secured yet stretched into their place as explorations of the mythological and consecrated feminine. Hanging Fruits, 2018. Hydrocal, acrylic paint, nylon stocking.
