As the title of the exhibition suggests, the artworks exhibited in this international art fair show were inspired by the book The Pilgrim’s Progress. In the Korean translated version of the book, I selected important phrases and then transformed the text into shapes. I decided to treat the text, the strokes in the Korean alphabet, as shapes. The outer form of Korean alphabets consists of straight lines and circles. In foreigner’s eyes, for those who cannot read Korean, these vowels and consonants are merely indecipherable shapes. With the perspective of looking at a text as symbols and images, I superimposed the consonants and vowels of Korean, which are part of the phrases in the book The Pilgrim’s Progress, onto each other. The overlap of Korean alphabets follows my theory of ‘Seeing and Being Seen,’ which I first presented in 2017. The original theory of ‘Seeing and Being Seen’ focuses on the distortion of image through digitalization. However, the artworks presented in the exhibition represents the beginning of a new phase in the ‘Seeing and Being Seen’ theory. Whereas the previous artworks utilized digitalization to transform the painted images, the new works are created without digitalization. The canvas was painted entirely black and the text, which is treated as shapes, were superimposed on each other in green color. The absence of digital work in the piece is crucial in the understanding of the artwork. Treating text as shapes and overlapping the alphabets created distortion without using digitalization. The overlapped shapes are no longer text, but an image. Even for Koreans with fluent proficiency in reading in Korean, the artwork is indecipherable code. As the artist of the work, I wish that the audience would find different messages hidden in the artwork. The Pilgrim’s Progress writes about the pilgrim’s journey to Heaven. I hope the audience of the art piece walks along the journey represented in the painting, and have the opportunity to reflect on their life
