A landscape photograph encompasses an expanse of scenery seen in a single view. Always changing, landscape as a subject matter such as this one allows me to encounter something new. Night Fall embraces the beauty of the industrial landscape. I was drawn to the landscape purely for aesthetic reasons. Night Fall is a study of light pollution at in an industrial scene at night. It features images of different factory style buildings in central Pennsylvania. I am interested in the interaction between the buildings and the fixed artificiality of the lighting. With influences such as Todd Hido and Peter Bialobrzeski, I began to investigate how the industrial landscape was seen. The number of light sources the surrounding industrial buildings provide fascinates me and although they still need long exposures, they don’t require as much exposure time as nocturnal rural scenes. These photographs capture up close views of behind the scene types of environments. Taken with long exposures they confront the viewer and over take them through detail and scale. My images are seldom manipulated apart from cropping or adjustments made to contrast or light levels. From the clarity produced by the amount of light in the image a feeling of being present is conveyed. Subdued lighting makes it much easier to express the character of a long exposure in an image. For example, long exposures allow the solidification of smoke coming from the top of a power plant.
