Marie-Josée Bergeron obtained a Fine Arts Diploma and a Bachelor’s Degree in Design from the Université de Quebec in Montreal. For several years she acted as an Art Director for various commercial trade shows, television, residential and special design projects. Bergeron’s passion for painting and communications has led her to teaching; she has created a unique painting program that focuses on intuitive abstract painting. In 2011 and 2012, Bergeron was awarded the Desjardins Excellence Bursary as well as an honorable mention from the respected St-Hilaire Museum. Bergeron’s artworks have been exhibited in several well-known cultural establishments such as Culture Centre in Montreal area and are present in many private collections across Quebec and Ontario, Canada Statement The underlying tendency of my artistic works lies in questioning the biological essence of life as well as the physical makeup of matter.  More precisely, I’m interested in the overall concepts of transformation and metamorphosis.  From a body’s embryonic state through birth I find myself fascinated by the unfolding of the path of life. Thus it is with keen interest that I observe the raw elements that constitute nature as well as those touched by the hand of man, concentrating my vision on varying environmental compositions. My interest in transformations and the “universal life force” governing the laws of nature, transcending my will, is the fundamental force pushing me to create these works.  Such works, analogous to life forms and birth, consummates itself in my paintings. In constant search of textures to nourish my work, I take pictures and gather materials to return to the studio.  All matter is sought as stimuli to glean visual cues and serve as inspiration.  Tree bark, paper, metals, stone, wood and fabric are but some of my favored elements.  I envision the canvas as a broad surface rather than simply a surface hosting a predominating image.  That which interests me is the plane relief of a flat surface presented from varying angles.  The surface becomes a pretext for my spontaneous and intuitive experiments with matter.  From my collection of various mediums of paint and mortar, regularly but not systematically positioned, I finish by creating a denuded pictorial relief from which, the remainder of my work emanates.  This stage, for me, represents the structural framework of the painting. It is from these beginnings, and the hues & colors from a preselected palette, that I stage a visual and chromatic presentation, the brush dancing at will over the surface.  I let myself go, freely and instinctively stroking the canvas, allowing shapes, lines and forms to shape random recognizable images.  I remain in a state of awareness to that which emanates from my sub-consciousness; I am the visual direction that embodies me through the gathering and juxtapositions of matter.  In my painting a shape is gradually fashioned one brush stroke spawned from the previous one.  It is happenstance guiding my works to take their form.
