Alla Goldburt Artist statement Born to a family of an artist, throughout my formative years, I was immersed in the environment of visual expressions. It is my first language. For me, it is the language in which I can express every sense that I possess, every emotion, every thought: the smell of flowers, the melancholy of rain, the rage of loss… It is a part of me. I like the idea of creating artwork that viewer wants to return to, every time finding something new. I would hope that each time a person looks at my art, he or she will create their own story, just like people do when listening to classical music. I would love to collect those stories. Beginning with Pratt Institute to now, I am astonished how the expressions of my works often appear misaligned with my emotional state. I may produce the most melancholy work when humming with joy, create a lively scene when exhausted, or paint an uplifting canvas when I am sad. Regardless, every painting is accompanied by a mental dialog with my mother, who was my tutor, my greatest support, my most severe critic, my chief influence and a master portraitist. Each painting is my journey through an experience that may be utterly insignificant as an occurrence, but meaningful to me in its visual sense. I live that experience in the process of painting, sometimes seeing the work in my head long before the first brushstrokes touch the canvas, sometimes deriving inspiration from a book, people around me, or a walk through Venice. When the stars are properly aligned, so to speak, the creative process flows like music and I am nothing but an instrument. But the music of my art is constantly transforming, and I am curious myself where it will take me next...
