I start by exploring with veils of color that drift and move, progressively building architectural mappings through layers and layers of paint almost sculpted on the canvas, creating effects of transparency through the use of diaphanous wash and drip. Whites and grays mask vivid colors and shapes. A figure may disappear behind layers of paint. Ooze, slithering mess are transformed by contact with a coagulated mass. To question our relation to the physical world, I often use mixed media: a broken corkscrew, a discarded piece of metal, a torn fabric. Giving trash a new life is my way of refusing to let the refuse swallow us. Abstract or figurative, my paintings are at once intense and relaxed, akin to the plane flying through the hurricane to reach silence and calm in the eye of the storm. Influenced by my practice as a psychologist, I explore the internal pathways and emotional maps that lead us to the heart of darkness and back.
