I believe my ability to compare things and articulate them in a way my viewer/audience can comprehend derives from my grand-mother. She was always great at using metaphors to me growing up in her household. This verbal technique became quite resourceful to me in the form of painting. Using metaphors I felt it was great for hiding in plain sight while at the same time expressing my deepest emotion artistically. At first glance, you would see just bold and vivid colors, however, majority of my works were illustrated to reflect poorly-chosen relationships and fears within. Working with metaphors I also needed key elements in detailing each piece and its meanings. I began using symbols such as, chequered patterns, clouds and “apple-shaped hearts” (preferably dark purple), to reflect my perspective of joy, struggle and vanity. Armed with these skills, I gradually mature into not just a better artist but a better person.
